MEET MARTHA:
Sewing and teaching sewing motivates Martha, and she loves seeing the look on people’s faces when they sew a new technique and are filled with pride and joy. When a student can say that it is the most fun, then she knows her mission is accomplished. Check her website here.

Design Questions with Martha Pullen
- Favorite way to display your projects? My favorite thing is dressing my children in beautiful clothes! I published Sew Beautiful magazine for 27 years, and in it, we featured the most beautiful children in the world, all wearing our heirloom classic clothing.
- What's your favorite part of the creative process as a fabric designer? I love getting fabric, lace, and other heirloom supplies and just starting to put them together. Making christening dresses is my favorite!
- What was your inspiration and process of design for the Bandana Paisley Gray print featured in our October 2023 Perfectly Pieced box? I love bandanas so the gray print was easy to love.
- How long have you been a fabric designer? I have designed fabrics for several companies over the last 40 years, and it has been so much fun. This includes quilt fabrics and dress fabrics.
- How would your describe your artistic style? My artistic style is traditional and elegant, characterized by a classic touch. I have a particular fondness for designing christening gowns, first communion dresses, and other exquisite children's clothing.
I love to teach sewing, and I've been doing it for 40 years. I used to be a college professor, teaching teachers how to teach. Then, I followed my lifelong love - sewing - and opened a sewing business that expanded into a 6 million dollar a year company. I have taught sewing on 6 of the 7 continents and cherished every minute of it. We've authored 70 books on various types of sewing. We've trained teachers from all sewing machine companies in the art of teaching sewing, with a special focus on heirloom sewing. We conducted workshops all over the world. I have a deep passion for sewing and have adored my business. I have a strong affiliation with Bernina, and Bernartex is a brand associated with Bernina. I thoroughly enjoy collaborating with them and have designed three fabric lines thus far. Additionally, I have authored books in collaboration with the Victoria and Albert Museum of Childhood, Kent State Museum, and Daughters of the American Revolution Museum.
